Kindergarten read It's Okay To Be Different By: Todd Parr. We talked about all the ways we could be different than others and how to celebrate our differences. Then students made two different people with fun sticky shapes. Continue to talk at home about how we can all learn from each others differences. 1st Grade watched a video Auto Be Good: Izzy and the Giant- In this video differences are recognized and eventually celebrated. We then talked about the differences between the cars in the video and how each of our differences is helpful. Such as being a small car can get into smaller places and bigger cars can lift or help move items. 2nd Grade: Students Watched Maya and Miguel: Give Me a Little Sign: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsWLzt-WIDw to celebrate and discover differences. Miguel meets a student who is deaf and learns how to communicate with him. They become friends and learn from each other. Each student in the class then received a letter and a picture about how to sign it. Students were able to teach each other their letter using their hands. 3rd Grade: Students watched When Maya Met Andy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YocizBfSAmA. Andy has a physical disability which to Maya's surprise doesn't stop him from doing many sports. Once students watch the video they are asked to color a w.s. with their non-dominant hand to simulate Andy's disability. 4th Grade: Read Aloud the book: The Big Orange Splot by: Daniel Pinkwater This book celebrates diversity by being proud of who you are and not changing for others. One house on the block inspired others to be okay with who they are and express their dreams through their house. We don't all have to look or act the same. Students then drew their own house that expressed their dreams and likes. 5th Grade: Students watched When Amazing Things Happen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JdCY-cdgkI to celebrate diversity of the mind. Then read aloud My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson Peat. I then asked students to write what they would do to help someone that was feeling uncomfortable or having a difficult time. I also asked them to share what they would want done for them when they are having a difficult time.
