In K-2nd grade we read The Recess Queen. The book lead us to discuss how to be a friend and invite a friend to play. Jean is considered the “recess queen” and everyone is scared to talk to her. Until one day a new student invites her to play and that changes everything. The book lead to a great discussion about how some kids may feel grumpy or upset and having a friend to play can help to change things for them. Students then practiced the skill of inviting others to play by circling the pictures that would be helpful as well as drawing a picture of them inviting someone to play. video.link/w/fCGWc

In 3rd-5th grade students have been reviewing the STEP process explained and listed below. Students then had situation cards to practice using the STEP process to solve the problem. The more this process is practiced the better problem solvers students become. Anytime a student comes to the counselors with a situation they may need help solving we are using this process. I encourage you to try it at home with students as well. 3rd-5th: The read aloud Best Friends in the Universe by Hector and Louie was read to students and used to practice the STEP process again. We also explored how to navigate mistakes or misunderstandings in friendships. Students also practiced using positive self-talk to reassure their self-confidence when someone may say or do something that bothers you. video.link/w/tPGWc
